Surrogacy in Delhi

What is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is the recommended treatment for couples where the female is not able to conceive medically. It is an assisted reproduction arrangement where a surrogate mother bears the child till birth and hands it over to the couple after birth.

Following requirements must be met for a surrogate mother:

  1.  She must be in the age limit of 21-39
  2.  She should have carried at least one healthy pregnancy before
  3.  Her personal health history and family history is good
  4.  She is screened for any infectious diseases or genetically transferable anomalies
  5.  Her Pelvic Sonography and uterine receptivity tests are okay
  6.  She signs a financial and legal agreement as required by intended parents

Why is it needed?

Some examples of couples who might need surrogacy service are females who do not have eggs or her eggs are not healthy, lack of a uterus, a problem with the uterine structure which makes conception difficult, female with a health condition like heart disease or diabetes due to which she can’t conceive, couples with multiple IVF failures, lesbian or gay couples or single males.

Few other cases which may need surrogacy are where the intended mother:

  • Is 40 plus
  • Is busy in her career and prefers surrogacy
  • Has had repeated miscarriages

Types of Surrogacy

Surrogacy can be of two types – traditional and gestational. In traditional surrogacy, the eggs utilized are those of the surrogate mother. On the other hand, in gestational surrogacy, the eggs used are of the female who is the intended parent of the child the surrogate bears.

Traditional and gestational surrogacy may require different types of medical treatments.

Traditional surrogacy is generally done using intrauterine insemination (IUI) to artificially inseminate with the father’s sperm. Also, in this case since the intended mother’s eggs are not used, she does not require to take any medication or undergo any medical procedure.

Gestational surrogacy is done using in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure where an embryo is formed in a test tube with intended parents’ egg and sperm. This embryo is then transferred to the surrogate mother’s uterus.

Since IUI is a cheaper medical procedure as compared to IVF, traditional surrogacy is mostly cheaper than the gestational one.
