What are my chances of achieving pregnancy with IVF treatment? It’s the major question any patient asks their fertility healthcare provider, and the answer is never set in stone.

The success rate of IVF treatment is a multi-dependent complex factor. The average IVF success rate for the first IVF cycle in India lies between 30-35%. However, many clinics claim a success rate of 80-90%, so is it true? Well, it’s not that straightforward to determine the IVF success rate.

In Vitro Fertilization or IVF, is the most successful assisted reproductive treatment for infertility since the very first IVF treatment in 1978. IVF has benefited numerous couples and individuals to realize parenthood. The popularity of IVF treatment is because it can address various fertility problems. Furthermore, it can be integrated with other assisted reproductive techniques to achieve better results.

What is the IVF success rate?

The term success rate (of IVF) is the percentage of success of IVF treatment, and it is distinctive to every patient depending on their medical and fertility needs. It determines the chances of successfully establishing clinical pregnancy and also live-birth rates with IVF treatment. The global average IVF success rate is 40% for a self IVF cycle.

In fertility clinics, the IVF success rate is determined by the IVF procedure, the experience of the doctor, and the patients’ fertility needs. Yet, the success rate changes between clinics and patients due to influential variable factors. A competent fertility center can improve your chance of conception with IVF treatment by up to 60%, generally considering.

IVF Success rate deciding factors

Determining the IVF success rate requires a deep understanding of the different factors influencing it. Depending on these factors, a fertility expert may take a different approach to IVF treatment to increase the success rate.

Age

The patients’ age directly affects their IVF treatment success rates. It is observed that women older than age 35 years have a lower IVF success rate than younger women. It is so because, with age, the quality and quantity of eggs women produce decline significantly.

Age <30 31-35 36-40 >40
IVF Pregnancy Rates 40-50% ~43% 35-40% 10-20%

Similarly, men above the age of 40 have lower sperm count and motility, which can further affect IVF success rates.

Type and Prolongation of infertility

The cause and duration of both male and female infertility influence the success rate of IVF treatment. Though most, but not every, infertility can be overcome with IVF treatment. For instance, severe uterine abnormalities can hinder the implantation of embryos and hence the pregnancy.

The severity of infertility is correlated to the quality of eggs and sperm, and poor-quality gametes may not be adequate to establish pregnancy through IVF treatment. And if infertility has been prolonged, it will antagonize the pregnancy and may also cause complications.

Condition of Endometrium

The thickness of the endometrium is crucial for the successful implantation of embryos. For a successful IVF treatment, the endometrium must be at least 7mm thick and healthy without any anomalies.

History of Pregnancies or Miscarriages

Women with previous successful pregnancies with or without fertility treatment have a higher possibility for success with IVF treatment. In contrast, past records of recurrent miscarriages or ectopic pregnancy may increase compilations in IVF treatment. A patient with a history of recurrent miscarriage requires extra precautions for IVF treatment at every step. Complementary treatments such as PGS or PGD may be coupled with IVF treatment to lower the chances of miscarriages.

Other Medical conditions

Medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis, and deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals, such as Vit D, Vit B12, etc., may affect the outcome of IVF treatment.

Quality of Eggs and Sperm

For good-quality embryos, the quality of eggs and sperm should be optimal. Almost 95% of the embryo quality depends on egg quality, and only a morphologically healthy active motile sperm can fertilize the egg for IVF treatment. Poor-quality gametes produce poor-quality embryos, which will likely not implant after the transfer. Therefore, the women must produce healthy eggs, and further, the gametes should be carefully selected for fertilization.

Embryo transfer

While the quality of the embryo directly influences the IVF success rate, reportedly, the number of embryo transfers does not substantially affect IVF treatment. But, multiple embryo transfers can increase the chances of multiples, and therefore, it may increase pregnancy complications.

It is observed that blastocyst transfer is 10% more successful than typical day 2-3 embryos, supposedly because blastocyst is the last stage before embryo hatching, and by the time of blastocyst transfer, the endometrium is in optimal condition for implantation. Furthermore, frozen embryo transfer shows even better results for IVF treatment.

Lifestyle factors

IVF success rates can also be determined by the lifestyle of the patients. Turns out that patients with a healthy lifestyle have better chances with IVF treatment. Women undergoing IVF treatment are recommended to;

A positive mindset is favorable for IVF pregnancy and live birth.

Number of IVF attempts

After the first IVF cycle, only 40% of women successfully give live birth, and the rest may experience failed IVF or miscarriage. That said, consecutive IVF cycles have higher IVF success rates per cycle.
